Love came a knocking
Love came a knocking one fine day
Love came a knocking in the month of May
But she shut her doors and turned it away
So love was lost on that fateful day
So she sat with her cat next her lonely hearth
A dreaming and a wishing of a different path
Her heart still sang and knew no wrath
So she sat and she dreamed ‘neath her lonely hearth
The seasons they came and the seasons they went
The rains and the winds her heart did rent
With her dreams and her wishes the days she spent
No mortal nor fey to her hearth was sent
She sat a wishing and she sat a hoping
She sat and regretted; her hearth a stoking
Her lonely heart there was just no stopping
Yet the fires in the hearth held on to the hoping
When love came a knocking on that Merry Day
An ancient pain turned it away
So then love slumbered till another day
For the blossom to bloom in a future May
So she sang as she swept and cleaned up her house
And the old ones listened; were as quiet as a mouse
Time and tide did come to pass
The time for love had come at last
So again, love came a knocking one fine day
Love came a knocking in the month of May
She opened her doors and bid it to stay
Love came a knocking in the month of May
